El Capitan
Mohr-Mitchell, 1926

TB 40" M B3M, From Robert Wayman's catalog for 1940: "Early. Fragrant. One of the iris giants, the flower being of mammoth size comparing with the giant Nene. A handsome manganese violet coloring, medium blue in effect. Should be in every garden at the present low price."

From Mrs. Dorothy Stoner's Iris catalog for 1940: "Huge flowered, medium blue of the heaviest substance; blooms last a day longer than most; midseason, tall."

(Oriflamme X mesopotamica), HM 1925

Comments: "My own observation: this iris has poor substance, barely holding its form...I don't see how that Stoner description fits. However the iris was positively ID'd by a HIPS iris expert. It is a rather large iris, and it does try to spread out its falls, but those large older iris could not really hold themselves stiffly like the moderns...then again, maybe that shape was considered good 'form' in the 1920-30's era?" - Laetitia, NJ
